Aleut Tales & Narratives
This collection of Aleut stories was originally collected by Russian ethnographer Waldemar Jochelson in 1909-10 in an attempt to preserve Aleut culture. An introductory chapter offers historical background, information about Aleut dialects and dialect groups, notes on the original fieldwork, and descriptive and technical information about the texts and their editing and translation. Following this are 75 Eastern Aleut texts on the left page and their translations on the right page, 4 Atkan texts, and 8 Attuan texts. Photographs and maps provide illustrations. Eastern Aleut song texts and Atkan texts are appended.
